Is it safe to walk in areas surrounding this station at night?

Thanks

About as safe as you're going to find in any Chicago neighborhood. That particular area isn't exactly teeming with people at night so that may be the only drawback. But the neighborhood on the whole is pretty safe by urban standards.

Actually, Drover, that area is teeming with people at night. Plus, there are the UC police call boxes at several locations. If a person feels threatened, the UC police will provide 'umbrella' service, i.e. they will follow you in a squad car. The restaurants and taverns in the area ensure that there is street traffic far into the night. In my experience.

how late at night? if it's around midnight or later on a weeknight, i would personally feel safer walking with another person (not many people out then). 55th street exit might have more people (more commercial area, with a 24 hour walgreens).

Thank you,

Its not the worst, but is far from the best. There are many Metra stops in the city far safer than that one.

Default Is there a Metra station in HP/U of Chicago area that is fairly safe?

What abut the 59th St. station? Is it any better? I'm going to be working at the U of Chicago and trying to decide whether I can rely on the Metra for my normal commute (looking at the Loop/South Loop area) or if I need to drive. BTW, I'm moving to Chicago from the Cincinnati suburbs and while not a complete idiot, I'm somewhat naive as to big city/mass transit.

59th is deserted at night. 53rd is fine. Very unlikely that anything would happen to you.

Thank you,
That 53rd st auto shop is long gone.

How bad could the 59th street Metra stop be? On the street its lighted and there are police call boxes on every other pole.

Thanks ajotl and Manigault. I doubt I'll be working many late nights but, just in case, want to be aware of my surroundings.
