hey

I am 18 years old and a musician and im looking for a good welcoming community for me. I grew up in NYC and I can't afford a place here so I am just trying to weigh the options on cities. Looked into Philly but I am having second doubts because the music scene is not the GREATEST compared to NYC, Chicago, LA. I can afford about 400-600/month any recommendations on neighborhoods? I really just need a place with a sizable artistic community where neighbors are not going to be mad when I am practicing.

Thank you.

Im looking towards something with more of a big city vibe. I am used to New York and I like the fast paced atmosphere. If you could recommend any neighborhoods in Chicago that would be great.

I'll throw out Rogers Park, based on the testimony of a number of of struggling musician friends of mine who have enjoyed living there over the years. I used to frequent open mic night at No Exit Cafe. Good memories.

I would check out craigslist for room mates that are needed if you are planning on spending only 400-600, that is more like the cost to split an apartment anywhere in Chicago. Anyway, check it out and search for musicians looking for roommates.

You won't be able to find anything for that price range in Rogers Park, sadly. Most of Rogers Park is apartment complexes/elevator buildings, much harder to practice in. At least, I haven't found anything. =[

I would look for roommates.
I knew someone who lived in a place with a bunch of other artists and musicians. I've heard a few houses around and such like that.
I imagine it would be much easier to find a house with other musicians, or find some musicians to share a practice space with than trying to find a place on your own. If you find a really cheap room to rent, and you split a practice space with others, it may turn out under $600. Maybe?
(note: I should follow my own advice someday. I hate having to mute my practice.)

I know of musicians in most places of the city. I wouldn't really say there's a concentration anywhere. Mainly, wherever there's cheap housing that isn't completely unsafe. Right now-- Humboldt Park, Logan Square, Lincoln Square, Bridgeport, Uptown, Pilsen.

Try to look around Back of the Yards. You may be able to get lucky.

Lincoln Square and (the OK part) of Logan Square are not that cheap anymore.

I only know a few musicians. One lives in Rogers Park and two live in Humbolt Park. I wouldn't say that they live in "sizable artistic communities" though. They live where they can afford to live...

There is a band that lives a couple doors down from me, but a one bedroom in Lincoln Square is usually around $1000. I am sure there are better deals to be had, but not in the $400-600 range.
