Do this. I am a landlord, and can tell you that you will almost certainly be at risk for eviction if you do not go through the landlord. Also, having the roommate on the lease protects you and ensures that the person can't just up and leave in the middle of the night. And most landlords will run credit and criminal checks on the person, which you probably aren't able to do, so this way you will know that the person you are bringing into your home is a reliable, somewhat safe person.

Just talk to your landlord about your issue, and chances are he/she will work with you. Contrary to popular belief, not all of us are evil. Though some certainly are

If the window is designed to open, perhaps you can negotiate a repair or replacement with your landlord. Sounds like that is a better solution.

Yes. Most of us CAN do credit and criminal checks on others by going through a third party vendor. It usually costs less than 50 bucks.

Thanks everyone for the responses. My question was really unrelated to the roommate issue. That is just how I was made aware of the issue. I am just trying to figure out if the bedroom meets fire codes. The window is not designed to open. The only way it could be opened is if it were broken. It has a complete floor to ceiling wall and no skylight. Just a door to the living room. Roommate or not, I was rented a 2-bdrm apartment and want to know if that is truly what I got.

Thanks!

Yes, it's a two-bedroom. The "two means of egress" requirement is for after you leave the bedroom. Your friends don't know what they're talking about.

This would be true. I think many high rise apartments do not have windows that open.

What constitutes a 2nd bedroom is that is has a CLOSET, not a window.
Hope this helps.
