Sort of. There is an extra 1% or so tax on restaurant meals in the central part of the city. I forget the exact borders of this tax district but I think it's somewhere like Roosevelt to Division to Halsted.

Problem with Taxes is that people keep voting in the same people.

Taxes are way too high in Chicago. I've lived here for a little over 10 years, and the taxes are out of control. That's one of the reasons I'm moving out of state very soon.

If you can find an equal or better job elsewhere, more power to you.

I've lived here 17 years and don't think the taxes are bad at all. I could find a similar job in a number of places, but those places either a) have higher taxes and/or cost of living, or b) don't offer the lifestyle I want.

I often think people who complain about taxes actually just don't want what Chicago has to offer, because I'm really not aware of any place offering what Chicago has that's significantly lower tax.

I dare one to compare the numbers on a mansion in Westport, Lynnport, Orleans, or Dalton to a mansion in Malibu, SilconValley, NY, or Chicago. Those are just some of the choice areas in Massachusetts with large estates. You can buy a 75 acre compound near the water in Massachusetts for $3-5 M. There are ones for $50M, but there are bargains.

Income tax rate is 5.3%. Sales tax is 6.25%.

You will be amazed. Come and shop!
