Uptown could be more affordable today, I don't know what impact the downturn had or is having on the neighborhood.
I bought my place in Spring of 2005 in Uptown-near the peak of the housing bubble, and it was easily $70,000 less just because it was north of Irving Park Road. You have to look at the sizes of condos to get a square foot to square foot comparison (Uptown has many units that are quite large). Edgewater SHOULD cost less because it is further north.

The bubble has popped in Uptown, but prices have only dropped modestly. It's in line with the rest of the city.

"Sheridan Park" is the portion of Uptown west of Broadway from Montrose to Lawrence. Ironically, "Sheridan Park" is west of Broadway while Sheridan Road is east of Broadway. And "Truman Square" is east of Broadway while Truman College is west of Broadway. Who came up with this stuff?

Sheridan Park is a historic district with some of the best physical buildings in Uptown. The residential streets are gorgeous and the six-flats are huge. It's not as safe as Buena Park and Margate Park, however. There are still a few problem buildings dotted throughout Sheridan Park, including gang-infested low-income housing, rehab clinics, and at least one halfway house. Gang violence does flair up from time to time, but things are definitely worse east of Broadway. And Sheridan Park wins the award for "most improved part of Uptown" over the past few years. I think it's going to be a great neighborhood some day if they clean up the Wilson El stop (which is another drawback to Sheridan Park).

As for the neighborhood being a shadow of its former self... I don't know what tihngs are like over by Beacon (seems pretty OK to me) but the Sheridan corridor is going nuts now that the weather is breaking. NWSer, if you're nostalgic for gunshots every night, go hang out on Sheridan and Wilson for a while. Sounds like it's worse over there lately than anyone in the area has seen in a long while.
"Sheridan Park", the park, is on the West Side somewhere. "Sheridan Park", the neighborhood, refers to the area immediately west of Truman College along Wilson.

Thanks for the invitation to Uptown, but I've never been a big fan of gunshots OR arson, so I'll have to decline.

I still find it remarkeable that the crazy chick from the Heart of Uptown Coalition ended up running the place. She used to come over and preach the pinkie activist gospel to me and my roomates. We thought she might be good because she SAID she wanted to throw the bums out and make Uptown a place for families, but from what I've heard, sounds like she maybe had second thoughts about all of that.

There is an old apartment building I saw today that has an old ad painted on the side of it (on the west side of Broadway-south of Montrose north of Buena) that says Sheri Park Apartments! So, hmmm. Buena Park was buried into Sheridan Park into fairly recently even though Buena Park existed before the Sheridan Park distinction. Now Buena Park gets its name back. But the part of Lake View south of Buena Park is still in East Lake View-I do not think it will ever be called Sheridan Park again.

I think at one time Sheridan Park extended down to Grace and encompassed parts of Lake View that are now in East Lake View. The area around the Sheridan L station was called Sheridan Park. (but of course is in two communities now) There are many neighborhoods that can fall into this category since boundaries were changed when the community areas were made.

This would explain the area around Lake View H.S. being called Uptown even though it is in the Lake View community area.;-)

That would either be Lakeview or North Center. Uptown has always ended it's westward border at Graceland Cemetary south of Montrose. But north of Monrtrose it goes all the way to Ravenswood.

Here are the Uptown sub-neighborhoods, if anyone is interested. The dashed line is the "Community Area" border. Buena Park (where I live), Margate Park, and the northern part of Andersonville Terrace are the safest parts of the neighborhood--along with the western and northern edges of Uptown. Sheridan Park is getting there, but still has some problems. Truman Square, Lakeside, and Clarendon Park are downright sketchy, but have a lot of potential. Argyle Park also has it's problems.

It is Lake View community wise of course. But neighborhhod wise is another story. Just like the neighborhood of Humboldt Park is in both the communties of Humboldt Park and West Town. That is the angle I am coming from.

Right on. But Lakeview High feels like Lakeview, too. I mean, it's really just a few blocks from the Music Box theater and all that other Southport hullabaloo. If not Lakeview, definitely North Center. In fact, I don't think anything along Ashland ever feels like Uptown. To me, to get that "Uptown feel", you need to be along Sheridan or Broadway. Maybe part of Clark.

Ah well. Gotta love subjectivity.
