Because it's nice, safe, has good transit options, and lot's of amenities for families and singles alike. It's plainly one of the nicest neighborhoods in the city. That's why.

also i am finding gold coast/old town apts the same price or even cheaper than most of them in lincolnpark or east lakeview and wrigleyville... is this true?

Families are moving back into the city from the suburbs, and that is Option #1 - good schools (public and private), good space, good restaurants. It is the closest one can live to downtown and not break the bank if you have a couple young'uns in tow.

Someone referred to it as the Park Slope of Chicago, and its not too far off of a comparison.

gotcha, I wasn't knockin Ravenswood, I was just analyzing prices from further in to farther out and going north from downtown it gets cheaper, then suddenly more expensive again when you hit ravenswood, then back cheaper again. The prices are just as expensive from what I have seen from GC/OT... at least for studios and small one bedrooms...the big savings though is in the 2/3 bedrooms

Totally hear you! After not being able to sell, I'm trying to rent my 1b in Arcadia Terrace (west of Andersonville & north of Lincoln Square) and it's super tough. I can see why everyone is foreclosing on their condos.

We are in a mid rise in Wicker Park now. Prime location and a great 2 bedroom. Our friend maintains the building and said our $1100 apt used to be $1550. I don't think WP has or is going downhill but crime is up in general throughout the city, usually indicative of economic climate. I do have to say, there are more empty storefronts than ever before. At least since early 2000.

A lot of those "empty" storefronts did not even exist in 2000. Many were built in the past few years.

When my Son first moved to an apartment on Roosevelt & S. Michigan the rent was 1,100 with a deal. He stayed for 2 years and it jumped up to 1,300. He moved out to Oak Park for his 3rd year. Now he is moving back into his old apt building and the rent is now down to 1,000 a month. I did notice the downtown apartments are all cheaper this year. He said many of the students are moving out of the city. He/we love the city and are happy to be back. BUDDY GUYS HERE WE COME! LOL
