1. Where did you live in Boston? (only if you're looking for something similar)
2. Where will you work?
3. How much do you want to pay?

I lived in watertown a suburb right outside of Boston. I will be working in the Mag Mile area on Michigan Av.

I have a tight budget my maximum would be $700 for rent

$700 will be rough anywhere on the north side.

Try Logan Square or maybe Ukranian Village.

Watertown is a nice town that I'm quite familiar with. Not too much like it within the city of Chicago. Possibly some lower density neighborhoods on the northside like Ravenswood or maybe Lincoln Square have somewhat of a similar feel, but will still be more urban overall.

With your price range you may consider getting a roommate. Did you pay 700/ month in Watertown?

Getting to the Mag Mile from anywhere in Chicago or even the burbs isn't too difficult via public transit.

You could get a studio for $700/month, but a 1-BR would be difficult in a nicer neighborhood.

Humboldt Park or Logan Square for a Puerto Rican guy all the way if you want to be near your culture.

Chicago is a huge city with many distinct neighborhoods with widely varying rates of crime. I would urge anyone moving to Chicago for the first time to check out this website:EveryBlock Chicago: Chicago local news and public records.

Use the crime browser to see the geographical representation of crime rates in different neighborhoods. You can sort crimes by multiple filters. As a quick proxy for overall crime rates, check out the geographic distribution of all homicides (http://chicago.everyblock.com/crime/filter/?primary_type=homicide - broken link) since June 15th, 2007 (500+).

I grew up in Watertown and now live in Logan Square, which sounds like it might be ideal for you. I live a 3 minute walk from the blue line (which goes straight into the loop), 15 minutes walk from Wicker Park and nightlife, surrounded by a slew of restaurants ranging from neighborhood puerto rican joints to upscale american dining. It's a mixed neighborhood, but I haven't seen any tensions so far. It's not super dense and nor is it particularly pretty in all parts (lots of sprawl and streets filled with crappy car repair places, fast food, etc...), but it is really easy to live here.

I pay $650 for a huge studio and I know for a fact $700 is do-able for a nice one bedroom.
