after officially being in Chicago for 370 days, I've just heard my first ever tornado warning! *sniff* now I really feel like a real Chicagoan

excuse me while I go pray and shiver in the corner

ETA: ok, in all seriousness now, should I be being something smart like staying away from windows and stuff? (sirens are kind of freaking me out now). don't really have a cellar to go into...

The sirens are going off in the city . One touched down in Elmhurst. I need to correct myself.I heard on WGN a tornado was spotted whether it did any damage I do not know.

I guess I was right to begin with.

In Elmhurst? Really? I noticed when the ABC7 website loaded that is said warning. I'm glad I'm missing that crap.

OP, if you hear a very loud train you'd better be under cover. We used our closet under the stairs on the ground floor. A bathtub with a mattress over your heads is a good place too. If you have power you can check radar online or on tv and if it looks like its coming your way, we always cleared the closet out and put blankets down to make the floor softer.

We rarely have warnings here where I live now but when we do we prepare for it.

This is kinda scaring me...my apartment is like all windows, so I'm basically sitting here with my laptop in a walk-in closet.

I would be scared too, neonwattagelimit.

My house really doesn't have anywhere to go either. You have to make do with what you have. Can you go downstairs to a basement in the building?

No. It's not a very tall building, though.

The first Tuesday of every month they test the sirens at 10:00AM. So you should have heard it before, but It may be quieter.

I had a couple of good bursts of wind by me. I also had some thunder/lightning that was so close I could hear it sizzle. I was outside on the porch for about a half hour.
