Definitely a crazy storm. We live right by the Blue line and during the first storm some large branches fell and blocked the trains coming from both directions. The conductors got out and moved the branches off the tracks, this was at the peak of the first storm and these guys were walking around on the tracks like it was no big deal at all.

Here's a shot from the second storm:

I do remember all those fun times down in the basement when I lived in Illinois. Best of luck to you up there. I hear it's been a stormy few days and more to come.
Yes, we do get some intense storms down here too, but they usually don't have the intensity of the storm Chi-town suffered last night. We also don't have sirens in most of the area either. That storm was immense. As another said, I don't think I've ever seen a storm that huge with so much red in it. I guess it's a good thing it was moving so fast.

You just get hurricanes instead, right?

I've been through one of those. I'll take a half-hour squall any day.

Glad everyone seems to be OK. I'm usually pretty calm through these - even the very near miss I had about 10 years ago (an F3 hit right about 3 miles from where I was) but I was kind of freaked out. I've never not had a basement to go to before, so me the SO, our two dogs and the SO's folks who are in from KC were chilling in my back stair well watching the storm.

Then I thought all was well and went to bed about 10:30 only to be awakened later by some of the loudest thunder I've ever heard. I also think it's a lot louder than I'm used to because of all the buildings to echo off of. Very weird (and of course kinda cool)

I had a dream about a friend of mine who is in Iraq right now ... probably because I felt like I too was in a war zone!

Well one of our criteria when we moved was to be far enough inland that we would not have to board up and evacuate. Photogal and I are closer to North Carolina than we are the South Carolina beaches. If a hurricane hits the coast we will get lots of rain and wind and some areas will flood but I am confident that my house will not flood even in the worst case. We are in an extreme drought right now and on the verge of water restrictions; we could use the rains that a tropical storm could bring.

I got a ride home on the Drive this afternoon and couldn't believe the number of branches and trees lying on the ground. My stepdad and his grandson were at Wrigley last night and said it was awful. Everyone had to go into the concession area and were toe to toe and it was, of course, super hot. Poor kid, a trip to the ball game was his birthday present and he got really scared! My son slept right through it, LOL.
