quigboto, my friend, have you tried the 606?

If you're a resident of Humboldt Park, the 606 does go through a part of it.

That way you could stay away from a lot of street riding, no?

I saw that poll and thought immediately one of the worst polls I have seen. I'm sure they have their "metrics" to back up the rating, but looking at it on the surface, it's absolutely perverse. Chicago has made a multitude and overt attempts to improve biking infrastructure. Chicago is many things, but a bad biking city it is not. Safety is an important dynamic but one of many. It's also incumbent on riders to ensure they are riding safely and have their wits in an urban/vibrant environment. Dumbest survey I have seen in a long time.

606
Lakefront path (and recent investment by Griffin) + Flyover
Active Transportation and their advocacy + their rides (Bike the Drive, Boulevard Tours, etc.)
Major Taylor trail
Divvy investment

Master Jay, you're right. I live very close to the 606 (2 blocks south of it) and have walked it many times. That might be a good place to get myself biking again. Excellent suggestion!

What about taking a bike on public trans? There used to be time of day limits for the el but now it seems folks will enter with bikes anytime. They can cause major jams.

Metra was even worse, in a way. In addition to time of day limits, bikes had to be tied down to the underside of the handicap seats so they would not jounce around. that was not a very workable solution.

quigboto, I was on the 606 2 times in the past month. I think it opened up around 2015? I remember the trees and bushes were so small then!

I will reach out next time I use that trail. Maybe we can bike a bit. I'll introduce you to Lotties, if you've never been.... A cool bar/restaurant.

Been to Lotties quite a few times. They used to have really good food but last time I went there I took my mom for lunch and it wasn’t good. That was a while ago, so maybe the foods gotten better again? That particular area has a lot of cool dining and drinking spots.

I remember when the 606 (aka The Bloomingdale Trail) was nothing but an old, overgrown, inactive (or rarely used) train track. (The bikers would sneak up there to ride) It’s been a great addition to the neighborhood.
Next time you’re up there consider a stop at Offset BBQ. It’s on California less than a block south of the trail. Good stuff!

quigboto, I introduced my friends from Milwaukee to Lotties, as well as my brother and his son.

That place has quite a colorful history!

I'll keep an eye out for Offset. Thank you for sharing the tip with the group.

I don't agree with whatever stupid methodology this article used, to call Chicago 3rd worst for biking. Really?!? To me while Chicago isn't perfect, there's NO WAY our city is that bad for biking. Visit other cities that've done even less for bike infrastructure, and you'll see what I mean.

Yea, this seems really off. I understand it if they are are over 160 large/large-ish cities in the *world* that are better for biking, but even when you do US large cities, the methodology ends up with Chicago near the end: https://cityratings.peopleforbikes.org/ratings

That's just ridiculous to me. Bakersfield, Memphis, Houston, Phoenix, etc. all better than Chicago? Eh.
