Who are some Chicago rappers who recorded some music in the 80s? I'm curious to check out some old school Chicago hip hop.

The first Chicago rapper I became aware of was Common back in 92. Back then he was called "Common Sense". Who were some rappers before Common to record?

Yeah, I’m not from Chicago, just a white kid from the east coast, lol. But Common was the first Chicago rapper I knew of. Loved him. I’m an 80s/90s kid. Not sure who were the Chicago rappers that came before him.

^^

So back in the 80s was House the dominate music scene in Chicago similar to how GoGo music was the dominate music scene in the D.C area?

What about that fast rap style some Chicago rappers are known for? I would think that style would have started to develop around the late 80s at least.

House music all nite long, say whaaa?!!

No 80's rapper from Chicago comes to mind. In the 90's, aside from Common, you got Twista. And then more recently Chance the Rapper.

There was definitely underground rappers in Chicago from the 80s. I went through an era of listening/searching "crate tapes" from the 80s featuring Chicago hip hop. But there weren't any prominent people that made it big. Just kind of from the block type of guys.

Rhymefest, Common, Twista, do or die, EC Illa, ILL state Assassins, Black AG etc are the earliest rappers that stick out which had at least a regional following. But I'm sure you know those. But earliest for most of em was at least 1990 from what I can see.

And Yes, House ran Chicago up to the mid 90s.

Kool rock steady. Even though he was more of a 'hip house' rapper

He was actually born in the Bronx but raised in chicago.

Another good Chicago rapper (though not "old school") from the early 2000's was Lupe Fiasco. I loved him, and loved the fact that his first hit song was about skateboarding (at least one of the meanings to the song, which I'm familiar with).

Always loved the music video for it, including seeing the large Puerto Rican flag in Humbolt Park prominently highlighted.

Interestingly he is now at MIT on a visiting scholars fellowship.

Great to see his success.
