Yup. The Midwest is the only region that has one singular dominant city that no other city comes close to. The South has Atlanta, Miami, Houston, Dallas as the big dogs. The West has LA, SF, Seattle. Northeast has NYC, DC, Philly, Boston. Midwest just has Chicago. Minneapolis and Detroit aren't even touching Chicago and never will.

People who say Chicago will become Detroit are hilarious

Chicago will be fine. This city has a diverse economy and will continue to be popular for college grads because of the urbanity the city offers. The economy is way too diversified to ever suffer a fate like Detroit. Like others have said, Chicago also benefits from being the de facto big urban center of the Midwest. People from other states in the Midwest will continue to pursue Chicago for opportunities and entertainment.

I agree. I may not be a fan of some Chicago doings, but yeh the economy is strong enough and the pull for young professionals ain't going away. Chicago is not going to tank anytime soon.

Chicago was once again named #1 for corporate relocations and expansions for the 10th consecutive year! Despite the defections of Boeing, Citadel, Caterpillar, Tyson etc. Chicago remains a corporate powerhouse.

Also in economic news, Mark Zuckerberg pledged $250 million for a bio-medical research hub for Chicago in collaboration with UChicago and Northwestern. We beat out 60 other locations to land the hub including Harvard, MIT And Cal Tech.

I guess this is bad news for a lot of people.

Thanks for posting. Both stories are significant, but suspect the second one will have the most near-term impact and buzz.

I just spent the weekend in Chicago and I haven't been back since before the vid. I don't remember before seeing this much homelessness? is this a newer thing? has it boomed in the last few years. Everywhere I went downtown and near downtown it seemed like we were getting hit up for cash. When we cam out of the symphony center they were all lined up and waiting for us as we exited and then waited in every door way. I am used to seeing this in Austin, Denver and the capitol of the handout Portland but I remember it before but to me it wasn't this bad.

The Northeast has NYC, there's no other city in the Northeast that comes close to NYC.

What do you think the crime rates will be in the next 5 years? If crime goes down the city will come alive again but I'm really curious when that will happen. I don't think the crime will be any worse than it is now because now is the worst.
