I live in River North area. Yeah crime has increased here as well, though I haven't witnessed any crime personally in the years I've been here. Just heard stories in the surrounding blocks. I've lived in the city 10 years now, but I feel there is definitely more tension these days.

Anyway I'm trying to understand how much crime is sensationalism and how much is the reality -- I guess one can't really know.

Is ChinaTown safe these days? Was thinking about going down there for a meal, but second-guessing myself. I really shouldn't care but with Delta + continued crime sprees, I'm wondering if the noodles are worth it.

Just want a sanity check lol.

peterparker20, ohhhh my WHERE in this world does one strike the balance of realism and living in an unwarranted fear?!? ahhhhhhhh.

I have been to many diverse styles of Chicago neighborhoods in the last 10 or so years.

I was in Chinatown on Sunday.... Worse thing I saw was a guy confronting another guy in Walgreens, stating he was harassing a couple of the female customers.

That's the worst I've probably EVER seen there...

Anyone else? Experiences??

I go to Chinatown rather frequently, (my GF is Chinese and also lives not far from there) and I've never had any issue or felt unsafe. I mean, sheet could happen anywhere , but as far as Chicago goes, Chinatown is a pretty safe area.

Back in June I realized I had not been to Chinatown in a very long time. It may have been 15 years since last there. So my son and I went and walked up and down literally every street before then proceeding to walk over to Pilsen. Felt completely fine.

I was in Chinatown last weekend. It was packed and vibrant as ever. Definitely not as late night as it was pre-COVID, though. Stuff is closing earlier.

My husband and I live at Michigan & 16th and have been to Chinatown several times in the past couple of months and it still seems to be relatively safe, and we have walked home around 9-10 pm. I have been frequenting the area for over a decade and I cannot say I see much of a difference in that aspect. I've never once felt unsafe or threatened in my experience.

Chinatown may be relatively safe but try going down to the bars around State St at 1am. Nothing but packs of savage animals roaming the streets. Will never go there without my gun on me.

I was there two weeks ago with small children in the early evening and things were just fine. No sketchy people like on State street in River North. I get the feeling the community is pretty tight-knit there which helps prevent outside trouble.
