Hi all,

I will be moving to Chicago in the next couple months and trying to figure out what neighborhood I should live in. I am in my late 20s and would like to find a neighborhood that is gay friendly and very artistic. I am very budget conscious and being close to public transportation is crucial. I really don't want to live in a Lincoln Park or Wicker Park but more of something that has some character to it. Let me know your thoughts.

Where did you hear Wicker Park is lacking character? There's around 77 neighborhoods in Chicago and WP is in the top 5 for most people, its been ranked very high in both local and national polls

That’s not what he said.

Arguably, WP is already well established/popular. Not what the OP is after per se.

I'm looking for something that isn't gentrified and cheaper (less than $700 / month)

What types of people does Edgewater and Andersonville attract?

Logan Square, Andersonville, or West Town/Ukrainian Village.

Plenty of gay creative types in Andersonville. Uptown too, really.

Bridgeport should be added to your roster of places to look.

Andersonville, Edgewater, Pilsen, and Bridgeport would all fit the bill. (Particularly the latter two for art scenes.) The "under $700" will be tough even in those places, though, unless you have a roommate.
