Hey! I'm like moving to Chicago in the fall too! What is your major going to be? I'm going for Fashion Merchandising. I'm still deciding between Columbia and the Illinois Institute of Art... Did you look at that school too? I won't know anyone in the area either! :-/

Lived in South Loop 2006-2008... good area, no worries... you'll get beggars and what not, and maybe some crazy influxes of people when events are in the area... other than that you are fine.

Chicago isn't really much of a fashion hub. However, if you do insist on coming here, I would choose Columbia over IIA for such a pursuit.
While at Columbia, I would take advantage of the cheap flights out of Chicago to NYC and visit FIT (
www.fitnyc.edu/ ) and check out what they have to offer, you might end up transferring.
As much as it pains me to admit it, lincolnparker also has a point about Parson's (
