You probably will get lost at some point, it's a big city! But I know you'll be just fine and it definitely gets easier over time.

The El/subway in Chicago is among the simplest in the world. Really. Hardly any interconnects or complicated multilevel stations. In London, Paris, NY and every Asian city I've been in you need a 3D map to figure out which trains go where.

In Chicago if you happen to get on train that is not the one you thought you can generally hop off and catch the right one just behind it or from the other side of the platform. Not a big deal. Sure some of the lines run through some less than great areas, but if you are at Columbia probably 90% of the trips you will want to make are going to be to the fairly major commuter/visitor areas. If you decide to head someplace south, like the White Sox at the Cell, or the Mies/Koolhaas IIT campus it is so obvious where you want to get off that you'd have to work to miss the stops. Going north or west is pretty easy too. Maybe the trickiest run would be out to Oak Park, but if you you stick with the Blue Line down the center of the Ike there is less hassle factor than going up to the Lake St. line. Once you master that you'll be heading up to Loyola's Lakeshore Campus and into Evanston and beyond.

Jenn make the choice you think is best. Chicago is amazing, I live in Seattle now but I really miss the pace of life and the attitude (or lack thereof) of the people. I grew up in the conservative suburbs and attended Columbia for two years. If you like the arts it’s the place for you and it looks great on the resume. But I was disappointed by the people, a true vibe of being open-minded until you meet the people that are liberal but just as close-minded as the conservatives I grew up around. But utilize the Internet, make connections and find people similar to you and have fun.

At the same time the advice that I can give to an 18 year old from Hawaii that I know very little about, is go to Seattle. Chicago is massive, flat, fast and mean and is a totally different environment from that of Hawaii. Seattle is more scenic, laid back and understanding. Plus it has a bigger college community, but not by much. You could probably find a place in the U-District that would be a reasonable price and close to Seattle U. Columbia is downtown and you’d have to live some place like Hyde Park, Pilsen or on the far north side to find something in those price ranges. The U-District isn’t the safest place, but it’s better then any of those neighborhoods and closer to your school.
Either way I don’t think you’ll go wrong, but in Seattle you’ll be closer to home in an environment you’re probably more familiar with.

I don't know much about Olympia, but it's not far from Seattle, is cheap and is known for being big in the local arts scene, especially music. It's also the state capitol so it's description reminds me of Madison, WI, which is a very cool town.

I saw you mention ESC which has reputation of being politically charged and good in the arts. I know that there was a little skirmish their after a Dead Prez concert a few months ago that the local right-wing media freaked out about, but it seems like a cool place to me and pretty similar to Columbia. I'll ask around but i don't know much more.
