I'm really disappointed that there's nothing like the Village in Chicago, but I guess there are other advantages to neighborhoods as well.

I guess something else that's pretty important is short commute times / potential walkability to work. I know this depends where in the Loop I work, but so far only River North and West Loop really seem to be close enough to walk.

The other neighborhoods like Lincoln Park seem a bit too far for my taste - I guess I'm spoiled that Manhattan has mid-rise neighborhoods so close to the main business districts.

And yes, the cost is significantly lower in Chicago!!
Lincoln Park is 15 minute train ride to the loop. It's like living in Chelsea and working in the Financial District. River North and West Loop are cold. They don't feel like real residential neighborhoods. If you're concerned about walking to the loop, might I suggest South Loop?

What matters more, ability to walk to the loop or neighborhood vibe?

I spent quite a bit of time in New York City over the past 5 years. My suggestion....If you can afford to live downtown than do it. River North, South Loop, Gold Coast or Old Town are all great options. All great locations. However, not a 100% match to the energy you will get in the village.

I will say that what you will get with you $3k in Chicago (apartment wise) will far exceed what it will get you in NYC on the same amount.

Either way congrats on landing a great salary in an awesome city. I hope to one day make it back to Chicago on a salary that will allow me to put $3k on a place. You are going to be able to live like a king.

Just know that you will not find another location that is a 100% match with the village. Finding that kind of energy and business is rare. However, Chicago is a great option in my opinion for NY transfers.

Hey OP, thanks for making this thread - i'm a native New Yorker, similar age, also thinking of moving to Chicago in the next two years (Likely by March of 2019)

Curious, what industry do you work in? I'm also looking for similar specifics in a neighborhood, but something that mirrors what Astoria in Queens is today to Chicago. Can anyone help with that?

Chicago has no direct analog of Astoria, but the Easternmost parts of Ukrainian Village are fairly similar.
