At my last apartment there were 4 units and no one got along particularly well except that everyone liked the couple and their kid below us. The family across the hall would blare (and I mean blare) this recoding of the bible at 8 a.m. every Sunday or play video games louder than you can ever imagine. The recording really did sound like the voice of God- which is pretty unpleasant when you spent all night at a bar.

The couple diagonal from us would get drunk and scream at each other for the better part of three hours before one of them would go sit in their car and blast their bass until someone asked them to stop and then they'd drive off.

And we had an ongoing feud with those same neighbors because she'd come grump at me when I had one friend come over and park in our parking lot. There were 8 spaces and we only had one car, the lot wasn't assigned nor did it have a sign saying it was for residents only. The only reason there wasn't space was because our other neighbor (voice of God man) had his crackhead brother staying illegally with them and he parked his beater out front. She never complained to them... probably because he was scary. She didn't appreciate it when I told her we weren't moving.

I don't think you'll ever get along with everyone, some people are just trash, and I definitely agree sometimes you just have to call the cops.

You can try talking to the neighbors - just be aware - if they are are really NFH (neighborsfromhell) that if anyone complains about anything regarding them from now on (calling authorities, etc) - you are the one on their radar screens now. They will think YOU called even when everyone can hear the noise it is so loud.

There are many unbalanced individuals (sociopaths?) who completely go off the deep end when you ask them to modify their behavior... (oh yeah, we'll show YOU type of mentality).

So, judge carefully who you directly confront with your issues. I would take it to building management first if it is an ongoing problem, then cops.

gardener34 - I agree, it is best to feel out the situation and trust your intuition on that one. certain people I will not confront, but in the case with my neighbors, it was clear that they were young kids who didn't know what the hell they were doing, and turned out to be okay guys, just a bit boneheaded.

Probably going to Evanston Northwestern Hospital if anything.

Hysterical. Thanks, you made my day. (Unless you're serious, then I hope you're not my neighbor)

My next door neighbors are just awesome...they have the dog that barks outside all day in the summer, a backyard filled with junk, landscaping that is completely overgrown and the house in disrepair, storage area in front of their house for miscellaneous Christmas decorations to hang out in year round, and best of all - junk cars and a giant pickup with a snow plow that they don't ever bother parking in their 80' long driveway or two car garage (that's where all the motorcycles go that the out of work dad owns so he can work on them and rev the engines all year with his scummy buddies that may/may not live in the house). Some days there are at least 5 cars parked on the street, and of course they usually use the front of my house for a couple.

Sounds like some Sanford and Son action.

So happy I live in a quiet building now, as opposed to the last two apartments I've lived in. One neighbor would never turn her music down. It would blare at 3 in the morning, she didn't care. I get migraines already as it is, so you already know I wasn't feeling this. But I don't like to confront people I don't know, so I let it slide at first. Once I did talk to her, she was not pleased that I'd interrupt her fun. But it didn't get out of hand, because I gave her a warning....in specific, graphic detail....that scared the crap out of her.

And from then on out, we were good.
