I've heard people use the term 'downtown' to refer to any part of Chicago. Most of these people are from the suburbs.

I would include up to Chicago Ave or so in my definition of downtown. So I'd include the mag mile and streeterville although it wouldn't be the proper definition.

Personally, it say: Loop, Mag Mile (which technically encroaches into the Gold Coast), River North, Streeterville, along with small portions of South Loop and River West.

Doesn't the City's Central Area Plan define "downtown" as Division at the north, Halsted on the west, the Lake on the east, and the Stevenson on the south?

People in the suburbs seem to think anything with a Chicago address is downtown. My friend's parents are always talking about how he lives downtown and he's in Wrigleyville...They live in Wilmette...

Historically downtown has meant the area WITHIN and directly adjacent to the Loop, but I think in a modern Chicago it can be extended to include the South Loop, West Loop, River North, Streeterville, and the Gold Coast.

Interesting. That would put Cabrini-Green downtown.

It cuts south at Wells and west again at Chicago, so the Cabrini-Green Projects are not included. I want to say it's so there's less opportunity for higher density housing on CHA-owned land, but I have nothing to support that.

I wish the city would just stop playing games and level those rowhomes. They're decrepit and a huge scar on the area. There is literally nothing salvageable about them. I understand there are legal issues holding that up, but that has never stopped City Hall before...especially when those impacted aren't affluent.
