If you want rock shows, rock shows you shall have.

You may have to wade through more stuff that's not up your alley to get what you want, but it's there. I promise.

Chicago has some incredible venues that draw acts from all over, as well as some great local acts. Every genre is represented here. I just got home from listening to some great bluegrass. (Not that you want bluegrass, but if Chicago can give me banjo and fiddle this far into the frozen north, you're ok for rock and roll....)

You'll be fine.

Well here's my two favorite local rock bands (albeit one of them may be a bit too "emo" for Avengerfire's tastes):

The Assembly

Swizzle Tree

By the way Avenger, you missed some serious rock at Sylvie's tonight. Unfortunately, there were only 5 people tops in the crowd. That place gets such lousy publicity that playing there is basically a rehearsal session.

Don't forget the Empty Bottle as a great place to see shows...

Anyway, when they're not at shows, all of the rockers I know used to hang out and drink at the Rainbow Club just south of Division Street in the Ukranian Village. I think that they have now moved on to hipper pasteurs and the Rainbow Club has become poser central, though I don't really know what the "new Rainbow Club" would be. Maybe the Skylark in Pilsen?

oh, i felt like the most awkward, out of place person EVER the one time i went to the Empty Bottle (i was absolutely not "indie" or "artsy" enough for it ), plus it was a pain in the ass for me to get there, so I don't plan on going back.

to the OP... there's plenty of places to go see music, I personally prefer the Note and the Beat Kitchen... and Ronny's, hah, even though that's the diviest of dives and the bands play in a garage.

I'm too old and not cool enough for it anymore, so I don't go. But you can't deny that this is one of the most important proving grounds for indie rockers in the entire city!

Local H have been around forever, but they're extremely active on the local scene and still put on one of the best straight ahead rock shows for $15 you'll ever find.

Man, the Rainbo club became hipster central like 7 years ago and that is when I stopped going to it. I, as a musician have had several haunts and kickback places that I have gone to in the past. Eventually it becomes "in" to go the them and they start to suck, have crappy bands play, and the prices go up as every hipster when 3 miles floods the place. And then many times the bar is rehabbed and turned into a yuppie bar. The bar scene here was way better ten years ago.

Gold Star was one of my places, but it started to change a couple years ago. I still would drop in when I have a chance, but only on a weekday.

I dont think that bar does any promoting, it is up to the band. So the bands did not promote well enough. I think the location hurts that place as well. That area was once a cool and affordable area for musicians and artists. Not anymore....:-(

The Assembly Band is actually somewhat tolerable. I would not call them emo though. Although the singer sounds too much for Bill Joe Armstrong for me , I still think they are ok. I liked the Tear Yourself Apart song the best out of the ones on the page. The less synth and more guitar the better.

I assume you were talking about Swizzle Tree being to much emo for me. In that case you are very correct. haha

The Assembly uses A LOT of electronics in their sound. (Granted all my rock friends use a lot of distortion in their guitars -- but that's not quite the same) The Assembly isn't quite hard enough for my taste.

I like Swizzle Tree though.

(And just to show that I'm diverse: ~:::Official Site of Colin de los Santos:::~ BAD ***** guitarist and all around good guy.

If you like singer songwriters, you MUST hear this guy.)
