Hi,

My son has an internship for 3 months beginning may 2015 two blocks away from Clinton Blue line.

1. Need help to rent an apartment /studio under 1500$pm.

2. Which areas are good and safe close to Division/Western/California/Logan Square

3. We were advised Wicker park, Ukranian Village , Bucktown. Logan Square neighburhoods.

Please advise on neighbourhoods as well as what is the best way to rent an apartment/studio.

Many Many thanks

Is the work location 3 block WEST of the Clinton blue line stop? If so you can probably WALK from places around UIC where there are very likely A WHOLE LOT MORE rentals available for the SUMMER, though frankly the Halsted ble line stop is probably better so I am guessing the intern location is not west...

In a way, if the work location is 3 block SOUTH I kinda feel sorry for the kid as that remains a mostly yucky part of the near-Loop, dominated by the huge post office facility and less-that-savory characters at the Greyhound bus terminal. They could probably walk to work from the Printers Row / South Loop neighborhoods where there are lots of nicer rental but not as much nightlife as the hipper neighbors mentioned above.

If the work location is 3 blocks EAST that would be right next to the Union Station / across from Sears Tower and that is a part of the Loop that is extremely well served with transit. It might make sense to consider walking / riding a bike from the west Loop / United Center area, an area with lots of newer apartments but again not as much nightlife as the hipper neighborhoods listed.

If the work location is 3 blocks NORTH of Clinton it would be in the fairly "tech" oriented corridor that is also well served by the green line stop at Clinton & Lake. One could also include the Fulton St loft district in the search for rental. There are an increasingly vibrant spots for night life in that neighborhood. It would also be easy to walk from the large number of west Loop rentals.

If you do choose to focus on Wicker park, Ukrainian Village , Bucktown. Logan Square you should know these are "party central" especially in the summer. If your son is 21 the difficulty will be adjusting to the "work / life balance" aspect of the internship and non-stop opportunity for raucous social life. If he is not 21 the temptation to illegally partake in the libations offered will be another factor...

It may make sense to explore the option of living in designated "summer housing" run by a consortium of Chicago colleges -- Chicago Summer Housing|University Center This is a very safe facility that serves the needs of college students during the school year. It is on south State St about 7 very walkable blocks of the Clinton St blue line stop...

You should be able to find plenty of Studio Apartments within your price range. One of the nicest areas of the city you could probably afford for $1,500. He can live anywhere off of the blue line. He can even transfer at clark and Lake from any other L line and still have a relatively easy commute to his internship.

A couple of apartment buildings I recommend he look into are:
Alta at K Station (14 min commute via blue line/walking)
K2 Apartments (11 min commute via blue line/walking)

The buildings above have full amenities and parking for cars is extra. Both have been built within the last 6 years. K2 is brand new essentially.

I recommend your adult son take on the responsibility to find the apartment on his own.

Surely it isn't common for non-adults to be given internships.
