Most Chicago suburbanites say they are from Chicago. It is easier. Who knows what Schaumburg, Aurora, or Oak Forest is outside of Chicago. Besides, it is the Chicago"land" area.

What I said was not meant to offend anyone but was meant as a question pondering what proportion of City of Detroit residents go to the University of Michigan or Michigan State or other big 10 schools and then go on to move to places like Chicago.

I was not alluding to race but rather as others have mentioned I am talking about the phenomenon of people saying they are from Detroit but it usually means the suburbs, the same applies to many other cities including Chicago to a large extent. I know Detroit is a distressed and depopulated city much more than Chicago ever was and am just wondering how many people who grew up in Detroit proper end up living in places like Wrigleyville in Chicago as opposed to being from some Detroit suburb.

Those living in the city of Chicago often say that suburbanites are not true Chicagoans but rather "Chicagolanders" and I wonder if this exists at all in Detroit.

I personally take great pride in living in the city of Chicago and not having to travel and tell people where I live with qualifiers like "Chicagoland, Chicago area, Chicago suburb, near Chicago, etc.", I can say wholeheartedly that I live "In Chicago".
