That is one aspect of cost of living, my bill is year is the same as last year btw. Housing costs are not particularly high here especially for a large city. Anyway, I think the tax burden in IL is the 13th highest in the country and the median income is around there as well. Would I like lower taxes? All things being equal, of course.

Are those people who grew up in Chicago or other places? I don't know anybody here regardless of whether they grew up here who thinks everywhere else outside of Chicago sucks. Most of my friends like at least one of SF, NYC, DC, Boston, LA, etc and most love traveling around to other countries too. I have a few friends who don't like Chicago as well and are here for their PhDs, though they don't really get out much so they barely know the city, but that's another story.

I love Chicago, and most people here would be surprised to find out that it's not even my favorite city in the world, but it's in the top 5 and it's great to live in IF you aren't scraping by.

Yeah, they are Chicago natives. Although, they really grew up in the burbs, like Schaumburg. I don't think they truly believe other places suck, they just like to say other places suck, and get very defensive if you suggest that somewhere else might be better than Chicago. It is sort of like an act that people do. That said, quite possibly the most annoyingly rabid booster of my Chicago booster friends followed her husband to Los Angeles and privately confessed to me "what was I thinking all those years?" and has no intention of ever moving back.

Yeah, well it's kind of like how some people from the suburbs claim they're actually from Chicago..not "near Chicago." I always find it weird when people claim they only like one city though. So weird. There's tons of great cities in the world.

It's the complete opposite of Detroit where they will take great pains to let you know they aren't actually from Detroit even if they're from the metro.
