With Sochi ending, the next Olympics will be in Rio 2016, when the Olympics would have been in Chicago had we won the bid. Does it make anyone wonder how it would affect Chicago if we won? How would it affect the Southside, gentrification, the population, economy, the worlds view of Chicago in general. Atlanta boomed after the Olympics there. And this is mentioned here:

Atlanta was already primed to boom.

Vancouver and London didn't really boom, and I didn't notice much change in the worlds view of those cities. Those Olympics have already been forgotten.

If Chicago had won it would have increased traffic for a couple of weeks, and not much else.

The benefits to the near south side and upgrades to things like transit could have potentially been immense -- Micheal Reese Campus is still a big hole in the path of development down from the south Loop. Upgrades to transit to link the proposed Washington Park temporary stadium to the rest of the "Olympic Village" could have really been a major upgrade to all ease of connecting the greater Hyde Park area into the broader transit system.

Upgrades to regional competition sites for things like equestrian events and white water canoeing could have exposed those sports to whole new population and would have been part of the expanded "public infrastructure" that could have brought generations more to appreciate those sports in the region.

The funniest part of the whole deal going to Brazil is that had Daley and the rest of the "delegation" played a little "dirtier" they almost certainly would have got the nod -- the guys from Brazil no doubt showed the selection committee a VERY good time with Rio's unique pleasures...

A little off topic, but The IOC is as douche-filled as any bureaucratic body can be, and has been at odds with the USOC off and on for years. I think they'll put off holding an Olympics in this country as long as they can.

I agree, there won't be an Olympics in the US for years.

This is the reason we've been snubbed from 2012/2016, and then in 2020 the USOC didn't even submit a bid citing differences with the IOC. However, the IOC/USOC have recently come to terms, and there's a very good chance that the US will win the 2024 bid. Though Rahm made an off-handed comment that he has 'no interest' in exploring a bid for Chicago.

There should be a permanent facility in Greece for the games. It worked well enough for the original Olympics.

I could see Los Angeles hosting a third time before Chicago or anywhere else getting a shot.

That's actually an amazing idea. The Olympics should be in Greece always, anyway.

Yes. Lord knows they could use the economics boost. And maybe the Brits would give back the Parthenon!

As for the OP question, "If Chicago won the Olympics," I like th eidea of a mano-a-mano battle of the cities.

I think we could take gold in the Corruption event, although Istanbul might pull the Byzantine trump card.
