The Southie projects in Boston were notorious for Irish-American criminal gangs. Whitey Bulger came from there. There were Irish-Americans in the Boston projects as recent as 10 years ago. Possibly might still be there today.

They're still there today, but don't dominate the neighborhood the way they used to. Charlestown is pretty similar.

What about the people who do not want to work?

An educated population benefits society; society being made up of individuals.

African Americans aren't white. Just ask one. There is a large black middle class but that's different.

How many people have you met who "don't want to work"? To be honest with you, that reads like some Rush Limbaugh mess. Poor doesn't mean lazy or bad.

I'm all for education. Everyone should have the opportunity to go to college and get a degree. That isn't the reality that we live in. Not everyone is college bound when they graduate high school. Some may be better off going straight into the workforce and gradually work their way up. Others don't have the funds or educated on the options available.

I've met many who have a high school diploma who are hard working people. Some make a lot of money, most don't. Even middle income single making 50k, why should they have to pay over 1200 a month for a decent neighborhood not being able to save for retirement or for an affordable home.

For the people who are in favor of heavy gentrification, why would anyone want to live in a city that can't provide opportunity to those who may only make 35k with good schools, neighborhoods safe with decent amenities.

There seems to be a bit of elitist opinions made by many. One final question, would upscale urbanites be willing to share their neighborhoods with others who make less money and have a strong commitment to having a great neighborhood. Owning homes, sending their children to the same school you send yours to.

I know. All the members of Blood for Blood are from the Boston projects. I've had song lyrics of there's as my City Data headline before...

Of course there are people who don't want to work; most won't admit it but some people don't want to work. No one said poor means lazy but you. Do people making less money want to share ''their neighborhoods'' with those making more money is a question that needs to be addressed as well.

It all comes down to the quality of the public schools. If they aren't good, people with money leave for a district that is good or incur the expense of private school.
