Neighborhoods change and people change. Change is a fact of life. Get over it.

Otoh, I wouldn't move into Wrigleyville and complain there are too many bars. I wouldn't live on the Mag Mile and say it's too crowded. I wouldn't move to Hoffman Estates and complain about it being too quiet.

People should live where they want to live. I kind of see his point but nothing stays the same.

After reading about Spike Lee's comments regarding gentrification, I tend to agree with him and his take on the "Christopher Columbus Syndrome". Neighborhoods in chicago are being "discovered" and changed with total disregard for the history or existing culture of the neighborhood. How can we find a balance? Is it possible?
How many people fighting to preserve the "existing culture" of a neighborhood have bothered to notice that the existing culture almost certainly displaced a different culture than the one that exists now? [Mod cut: racist/derogatory]

In a dynamic city like this one, the only constant is change. Sometimes it works in your favor, sometimes it doesn't.

My very first neighborhood in Madison, WI where I lived in the 1970s is now one of the worst in that city. I really wish the newcomers had respected the "history and culture" of that neighborhood (i.e. one that was safe, clean, quiet, and without shootings).

I just rolled my eyes at his rant, how embarassing.

Not getting into the nuts of bolts of it, but he's saying that a certain people were there first and now they're being forced out of a neighborhood that's historically been home for them and going elsewhere.

Umm, was he not around in the 50's and 60's when these neighborhoods turned over the first time? Doesn't matter why they turned over, just the fact that basically EVERY neighborhood in older large cities have turned over countless times. No one OWNS them.

Wonder how much his father's brownstone is worth now? Paid $40,000.00 for it in 1968; [Mod cut: this kind of remark is not needed]

Not sure why my comment was cut since the whole point of Spike Lee's comments is about white people moving into Brooklyn. Interesting that no one has cut Spike Lee's comments about race.

Mod cut: discussing moderator action..

Regarding Spike Lee, it's very simple - just like lenniel said, put your money where your mouth is. Otherwise you're no different than any other 1 percenter. At least the old school robber barons tended to give most of their money to philanthropic causes as they aged.

Bingo.

Brooklyn, NY has a large Jewish population. They put their money where it counts.
