It's just common sense.
You can feel fireworks.

O heard very few gunshots compared to last year
Right very dumb if one cannot tell the difference. Fireworks are more of a boom. Guns are more of a crack sound. Not that I hear gunshots often, but there is a clear difference.

Anyway I heard two gunshots on NYE right after midnight and after all the fireworks started going off. Actually scared me a little bit because I think it was real close.

There is not as much of a gun culture with normal residents of Chicago as there is in other parts of the country or even other parts of the state. I don't recall ever hearing a gunshot living in Chicagoland having grown up never firing rifles or any other gun.

And while there are a lot of shootings in Chicago, more in certain areas than others and considering how loud and tall the city is, it'd be hard for sound to travel

I am sorry even if you never heard a gunshot in your life, when you hear it you will know it. If you hear something like a firework, well then it was a firework, if not then an explosion. When you hear a gunshot you will know it's not a firework and leave you asking "was that a gunshot?" even if you never heard it. The sounds are distinctly different.

I heard a gunshot maybe twice in my entire life (and it wasn't crime related) and that was when I was a kid, but the pop/crack sound a gun makes is very different from the boom of fireworks. If you never heard a gun, trust me when you do, you will know what it is even if you never heard it before.

Yeah I did, but not in chicago but in the suburbs it didn't lost long as of last year. (Maybe Because of the cold?) anyway I have been hearing gunshots since I was baby in a different city.

It's normal actually sometimes expected it happens mostly all cities in America. You can go to youtube and type "New Years gunfire" and you can hear all the lovely gunfire from all cities and towns... I would post some but I might get in trouble?

I have, since moving out of Chicago, heard gunfire. Shot some myself too at the range. But I still disagree. I've fired all sorts of fireworks, and some of the more explosive ones M-80s or M-whatevers can pass for guns, depending on the firework and depending on the caliber of gun. Who knows, maybe I did hear gunfire in Chicago before and just assumed it was fireworks. I always assume the best in my fine Chicago neighbors

Not sure why you'd get in trouble, if it's related to the topic and not vulgar or violent. Don't quote me though !

I could not tell the difference. But I have never been around guns, shot a gun or seen anybody else shoot a gun. I really could not tell if it is fireworks or a gun.

I hunt and target shoot fairly often, and can easily tell gunfire from fireworks. I didn't hear any gunfire in the SE corner of Logan Square. Very few fireworks as well (most of the fireworks I did hear were mine). In the mid 90's we had a neighbor in Ukrainian Village accidentally shoot out both our phone and cable lines with a shotgun on NYE.
