Both my girlfriend and I love to walk and people watch. We are also new to Chicago and live right off of the L.

We are trying to find places to walk inside --so be it during hot weather or cold. We know about Block 37 and the French Market (this one not being great as my girlfriend is on a health kick and doesn't appeal to her healthier ways), but are otherwise stumped. Maybe the Merchandise Mart? I don't know anything about it.

We'd prefer somewhere we don't have to spend money and is easily accessible by the L.

Ideas?

The downtown area has a whole pedway system underground. It's fairly extensive...

Debatable upon how extensive it is, and the portions that are lined with options for eateries / commerce might not exactly be the best places for people watching...

This map includes many sky bridges and such that may not always be accessible : Mark Spiegl's Chicago Pedway Map

Watertower Place Mall, 900 N Michigan mall, North Bridge mall. Don't have to spend money at any of them to walk around.

I second the Art Institute membership. You could also do a Field Museum membership, although it's more of a walk from the train. Speaking of the train, I think you can still walk all the way from Lake/State to VanBuren/State on the Red Line platform. That's about 3/4 of a mile, all underground. And nearly as long in the Blue Line.
