Hi,

I am a 24-year-old woman moving to Chicago and I have the opportunity to live with two roommates at a place on the intersection of North and Oakley in Bucktown/Wicker Park. I want to know if this is a safe area. i will be going to school downtown and will have to take a bus and a train to get there. I also won't be getting out of classes until 9:30pm. Will this commute be safe at that time? Since I will have 2 roommates, I will be paying a little less than $700 a month. I have been planning on paying $800-900 a month for a studio in Lakeview or Lincoln Park. Is the neighborhood and price worth the extra commute?

Any advice would be great! Thanks!

I lived 2 blocks from there for about 2 years with my girlfriend. While I'd say it's not as safe as most parts of Lincoln Park and Lake View, it's still quite safe. It's a pretty busy area...not far from the 6 Corners. Just no headphones at night.

I wish I were still that close to Handlebar.

Wicker Park is generally pretty safe these days, but being ON North Avenue close to Humboldt Park, you can be sure to have plenty of traffic coming through from the gang-infested neighborhoods to the west. You'll probably be fine, though. And the location is very convenient to a lot of the Bucktown/Wicker Park hotspots. It won't be quiet Thursday-Saturday, though.

Are you sure about that? It is a short walk to the Blue Line at Damen and North which will take you right downtown.

I lived a couple blocks from there a decade ago. I never felt unsafe and I would walk all over after having some beers at the many local pubs.

I live 2 blocks from there, and it's safe. There is also a GREAT Italian Beef Sandwich shop on that corner!

I walk around there (but generally stay east of Western Avenue) on weekend nights and don't even give a thought to safety, but I'm a moderately big guy. Use ordinary precautions and you'll be fine.

You funny (but generally stay east of Western Avenue), living on North and Rockwell and I'm very happy about. I lived in Wicker Park between 1994 to 2008, I saw all yuppie movement to Wicker Park which I hate it. If you so scary why you move to Chicago and Wicker Park. I'm so tired about all this bad rap
of west of Western.
