There are a few listings in this area (3900 N LSD, 3950 N LSD, and 655 Irving Park) all within the same block.

Anyone with any experience with or knowledge of these buildings/areas?

Thanks!

Well, here are a couple threads where 655 W. Irving Park was talked about:

Thanks, andrew61. I also appreciate your insight as a long-time resident.

Following your lead, I was able to find this one as well: https://www.city-data.com/forum/chica...do-3950-n.html

and

These buildings are so, so, much further away from any area I've looked at thus far. I don't need nightlife or anything, and I'm not a baseball fan, I just want a nice place to live and work peacefully.

I was worried, like everyone else who has posted, about the relative prices here vs other parts of town, but it is starting to make sense.

I didn't realize your building had the dog problem until just now, which is sad because it seemed to be the nicest. 3950 seems like it would be a good fit. I'm still combing posts/reviews/sites so all advice welcome!

The area is good and quiet, but there is stuff close by too. Buena Park to the north of Irving Park Rd is very safe too. My girlfriend was about 1.5 blocks south of 3900 LSD so I know the area pretty well. I like the area around Broadway from Irving Park Rd all the way south of Diversey a lot. It is all different. There are bars but it's not a ton. The area is quiet but within a short reach of craziness if you need that too.

On another note, I am not a fan of the outside architecture of the high rises in Lakeview, but that's another story. The inside of them can be another story too.

Thanks marothisu. "Quiet within a short reach of craziness" describes what I want perfectly!

The 3950 building initially turned me off, it seemed to have such a "dated" exterior. From the searches I've done, the apartments vary from bare minimum to beautiful remodeled newish-everything.

There is a cluster of pre-war co-op buildings clustered around Belmont Harbor and a bit north on Lake Shore Drive that rival the great vintage apartment houses of Park Avenue in New York City. These buildings can be quite amazing inside and out, but since they are typically co-op it can be a challenge to purchase a unit. The monthly "maintenance fees" can be $1200 and up, and they typically have strict restrictions on how much of the purchase price can be financed. Also, co-op boards have a lot of control over who they allow to purchase units.

It is a great area. There may be the occassional drunken Cubs fans, but you'll be fine.

It looks to be so. I am warming up to it. I was so focused on the lower areas of the town, but I'm learning a lot more.

And hey, there's a Target!
