Madigan did not pour enough effort into Smith not getting the seat back. Well, let the state government throw him out again!

Of course they were. They just don't care about this sort of stuff. Same thing with Jesse Jackson Jr.. He's in the funny farm under investigation by the feds yet still won re-election by a landslide. This is Chicago, after all.

For the most part people just weren't paying attention. Smith also put a lot of signs up that said something like "Vote Democratic - Obama and Smith". Tyson also could have done a better job campaigning, and wasn't helped by the fact that the only thing on his political resume was that he served as chief of staff for Todd Stroger. I know a few people who were aware of the candidates and just didn't vote because of Tyson's connection to Stroger.

One thing that is really interesting about the race is how it shows how limited the reach of "the machine" is in high turnout elections. They really got behind Tyson and did work to get him elected. The numbers they turned out would have been enough in a municipal election, but weren't nearly enough for the turnout in a presidential election.

The 10th covers much of the West Side, Wicker Park, Bucktown and a good chunk of West Town. I'd imagine there are some people posting here that reside in that area. I'm a bit North of there (Berrios' district) but I saw Smith signs all over the place on election day, especially at my daughter's school (which was a polling station).

People that voted for him - might be crooked too, birds of a feather flock together. hey just watch any You Tube about how stupid people can be - anyone ever see Jay Leno's Jaywalking segments? A reporter will ask people questions like "How many United States are there" and they will say "uhh,, ummmmm 57?" or they will say "I dont know"... or other hard questions like "do you know who Sarah Palin is" and they dont know. Stuff like that.
