So after checking these forums for the past month or two I finally made my way back to Chicago to sign a lease.

I wanted to stay in the Lincoln Park or Lakeview area and ended up in Lakeview. The address is 644 W. Surf (I hope its safe!)

The apartment was really nice inside (Lobby kept up really well, apartment looked good) and I walked around the neighborhood two nights and never felt like I was in a sketchy neighborhood. Plenty of people my age around (mid twenties) and lots of shops and bars.

Think I did ok? I hope so!

Lakeview Associates, Inc. - Apartments for rent in Chicago Illinois

380 square feet....$745/month rent

But the building was kept up really nice (VERY elegant inside) and it was close to lots of stuff.

I think you did well. That's Lakeview, but is literally a stone's throw from Lincoln Park. I think Diversey is the divider. It's a great neighborhood to start with. Travel around. As you learn the city, you may find a neighborhood you like even better, or might go for a different part of Lakeview. The city is yours.

The neighborhood is nice and safe. Just be mindful. Like in any city with public transit, just because the people in your neighborhood won't bother you doesn't mean people won't come to your neighborhood to bother you. I've got a few friends who have been mugged in Lakeview. Force was never used, and in both cases they were females walking alone on side streets late at night. Not the best planning. Just be aware of your surroundings.

Welcome to Chicago! You'll love it.

That's a little steep for that square footage, but enjoy it. Live it up. Seriously, it's a very fun area, imho.

I agree with this. That seems overpriced, but if the building has great amenities, than that could make up for it

You are in a safe neighborhood with a ton going on.

With that price all utilities are paid which is nice.

I looked at around 12 different apartments...all of which were 300-400 square feet...and none of them under $700.

The thing that really sold me on this one was the sperate kictchen and dining area...the fact that the building looked VERY NICE inside (it will be nice to come home to this lobby) and the landlord seemed like a very genuine and nice guy compared to some of the others I met.

The lease goes until the end of August...so I figure this will be a decent starter apartment until I figure what I can and cannot budget and give me a little more time to look for the new apartment next year

That is a great area. We used to live just a few blocks away at Sheridan and Oakdale. Tons of stuff going on literally right outside your door with pretty easy access to the lake and the loop.

Cousin's (just south of Surf on Broadway) used to be one of our regular restaurants. There's a great used bookstore just south of Oakdale on Broadway.
