You should look at weather.com 10 day as it gets closer. I would recommend jacket for night time. Could be in the 40's at night. During the day 50's. Also it can be windy, one never knows. It would probably be windy near the Lake for sure if you stay downtown.

Snow that would do anything to your flight/schedule is very improbable in mid October .. but a jacket is a must..even if it's 'Indian Summer' during the day, nighttime temps will drop off quickly ( the humidity is quite a bit lower during warm spells in Fall) , plus nighttime comes a lot earlier .. At worst, it'll be chilly and rainy and windy .. , at it's best it's spectacularly nice ..

It is possible to get flurries in mid-October, but I definitely wouldn't WORRY about that.

During those dates in Chicago the average high is in the low 60's, the average low in the mid 40's. It can really be anywhere from the upper 20's as our record lows, to the mid 80's as our record highs.

Predicting weather in Chicago from around October through May is like saying "What kind of mood do you think my 2 year old daughter will be in a week from Thursday?"

Snow? Slim to none. Rain fo sho, fog maybe, but snow? I doubt it. It's happened like once in all my years of living here, but the ground is still too warm for it to stick, so snow is not the problem. Low clouds and fog will more than likely be what causes any flight delays if any. Usually we are either just finishing up our Indian Summer that week or it is going on right around then, so plan on mid 50's to upper 70s for highs and mid 30s-mid 40s for lows and it can be rainy like Portland or Seattle rain where it's a light steady rain or drizzle in the fall here so plan on that, but that comes more at the end of October than the middle so you should be ok.

Expect anything from 30 to 80 degrees.

If you're trying to figure out what to pack, wait until a couple days before you're leaving and then get a 10-day forecast from the Trib or Sun-Times website.

it sounds like chicago is like denver- crazy weather that can change at the drop of a hat. fun. thanks

I'm less concerned about what to pack (which, given the fact that I'll be traveling with my 5 year old, will be everything including the kitchen sink) than with whether I'll be trapped in the airport with said 5 year old . I soooo don't want that to happen.

Get a stack of index cards and put your name on one. Label a flight of stairs, each step with a temp starting at 30 and going up 5 deg with each step. Stand at the top of the stairs and throw the cards into the air. Whatever step your name lands on will be the temp. If your card lands with your name up it will be sunny. If it lands down it will be cloudy. That's about as accurate as anyone can get to a forecast this far in advance. Each day closer to your travel date remove one blank card and use same procedure.
