October weather in Chicago can pretty much run the gamut. Mild to cool days and chilly nights are the norm, mostly, but you can have almost anything weatherwise. Last year we had mid 80s the first week in October, but by the second week we actually had measurable snowfall one morning. So you never know.

My advice: Bring clothes for both warm and cold weather.

I'd say that is a good general description of the weather, but there were enough nice days for me to have jumped in the lake and swam twice last year!

Yeah, for instance Halloween can get as warm as 84, but the record low for that date is 30. So it can at times even get below freezing on some late October nights.

Back in the 1940's the city had their first freeze on October 18th!

Carmines is great people watching, though I always find the food somewhat overpriced for what you get. The menu is somewhat typical, classic and not very exciting. My mother-in-law insists on going there every visit, she likes it that much.

If you don't mind taking a cab, hit either Francesca’s on Taylor in Little Italy or Mia Francesca in Lakeview (on Clark down the street from Wrigley). They are the best true Italian restaurants IMO in Chicago. (It's really weird, though, to now have them all over the suburbs!)

October Chicago weather:

In a word, iffy.

Staying in or near the Mag Mile is a strong choice for out of towners and where there is a ton of things to see and do.(If you stay in this general area, just walk outside with all of the humanity and you won't have trouble finding or asking for and finding much of anything) Tons of hotels to choose from in various categories. Also consider the internet choices of priceline etc....and type in a dollar amount and you can get some real deals sometimes if you don't mind where you stay.

All the Italian choices mentioned are good choices, and all and plenty of others are within a reasonable short distance of where you'll likely stay.

May be a slight chance of snow (1-2%).

I would not worry much about October. I doubt you will have any problems that are weather related. It's possible, but I would worry more about it closer to Thanksgiving.
