I have good credit rating and can afford to put down 20% for anything up to $700k.
So you work in Schaumburg, want to live in the city and money isn't a problem. I would recommend living halfway between where you work and downtown Chicago, so in other words the northwest side of the city of Chicago near the Kennedy expressway. In the O'Hare/Norwood Park/Edison Park/Edgebrook neighborhoods you could buy quite luxurious single family homes for that money. Also if you live near the Blue Line you have the option of taking public transportation to downtown recreational destinations. These neighborhoods may not be Lincoln Park in terms of excitement but at least they are not the crappy sprawl of the NW suburbs that you seem to want to get out of. There are options besides places like Lincoln Park and the suburbs and more people should look into them and you would still have the prestige of saying that you live in the city.
