Fewer BTDBs (Big 10 Douchebags) online. More BTDBs in line.

I probably wouldn't go out of my way for Map Room. It's very close to my place and I mostly appreciate it for day and early evening drinking. I like the music and the old National Geographics. It's not as great at night. The bartenders tend to get snotty when it's crowded.

Jeez - I just ragged on one of the bars I listed as a favorite. I guess I'm just realizing that I don't really like Chicago bars all that much.

Here's Our Counter To Complex Mag's "25 Douchiest Bars In Chicago" List

I agree with mostly all the ones mentioned on this list too.

Nice, Dukes on Clark made the list. I've heard good things about 3 Aces too.

Speaking of Non-douchy bars there is a place in Wicker Park, not too far from Violet Hour that I got dragged to once. It's within walking distance, and I think it was on a side street. The bar looked more like an old house on the outside, and the same with the inside. It was more like being at a house party. Small bar on the left and as you walk back further there is just couches and seating. It's hardly a bar. Jakes? Justins? One word name I think. Any ideas?

I guess it counts as one, but I'm a big fan of the small bar area at the upstairs of Le Colonial. If you've been, you might know why, especially when there's a lot of people up there and it's a cool crowd...and when there's celebs up there, it's a plus. I also like Club Crescendo if we're talking about clubs.

There's a lot of cool bars I've been to, but easier to just say what I don't like:

Most stuff on Division and most bars frequented by obnoxious college kids in Wrigley especially. I once went to St. Patty's there...pretty terrible. You can't stand talking to anybody without someone bumping into you or stepping on you every 15-30 seconds. Not a fan of Soundbar either.

Charleston was mentioned, great bar.

It seems like most of us are on the same page regarding the bar scene, so how is it all those TERRIBLE bars we mentioned have lines to get in and all the great bars we've mentioned you can walk in and get a seat at the bar?

Something about the type of ppl who post to internet forums?
I have no problem with lines and many bars I like do have lines. So there's a lot of people there, big deal. I care more about what the bar inside is like and its people.

Most bars are really the same apart from the decor and maybe prices sometimes and a few trivial drink items. The people is what makes the bar IMO.

Bars with lines mean bars with no open tables. I like to sit and drink my beer with good friends. Standing with a drink all night is one of my least favorite things.

Another bar I loved in Chicago was Beachwood -- divey as they come, but great jukebox.
