Hi, I am a single guy in my mid 20s about to start my residency in Loyola Medical Center (in Maywood) from June. I am looking for neighborhoods where diverse, young professionals live. I will be driving to and from work so I am looking for a place with good parking options. I would prefer not driving more than 20 min to reach the hospital. My salary will be in the mid 40k so I think my budget is $900-1300.

Which neighborhoods would suit me?

That budget seems a little bit high for your salary and the fact that you have a car... Also, 20 minutes from maywood wont put you close enough to downtown where the night life and 20 somethings live. I might be wrong though...

If you want to live that close to the hospital, you're pretty much going to have to live in Oak Park. There are tons of loyola medical residents who live in OP.

Thanks for the replies. Honestly, I have been a student all my life so don't have much experience budgeting. Maybe $800-1100 is more appropriate for rent given my salary. I will definitely need a car though and probably a parking spot. I realize I won't be able to live around the loop but I do want to live in the city. Some residents have mentioned to me that Wicker Park/ Bucktown is where many single residents live? What do you guys think? Do these neighborhoods have good parking options? Google map says Wicker Park is about 20min ish from loyola med center. From reading other threads on this site, it seems like a lot of young people live there...

That's about what I make. 800-1100 is still really high.Your rent should top out at around 800 to stay within your budget. Also, whatever google maps tells you for a commute, double it. During rush, that will be what you are dealing with.

Thanks for your advice. Looks like I will be searching for cheaper apartments! My work hours will be from 6 AM to 6-7pm so traffic on 290 shouldn't be an issue should it?

If you take OPD's advice and look at Oak Park... not really, no. The distance is short enough that it would be relatively tolerable even at the peak of rush hour.

I concur. Oak Park makes sense. You are also close enough to the city for some nightlife whenever you want it. I think Oak Park along Harlem Ave. may have some inexpensive apartment rentals. A relatively quiet small city vibe with a walkable town area with some good restaurants and cafes. Mostly families with enough of a younger population.

Wicker Park is livelier than Oak Park, but probably a bit more than 20 minutes one way. Yes traffic is horrible in Chicago and rush hour starts before 6 AM and ends around 7-8 PM.

Depending on your priorities, it might be worthwhile to live in WP and tolerate a longer commute. Then again, as a 1st year intern, you may not have the time or energy to take advantage of all the offerings of WP, and a less exciting neighborhood with a shorter commute may be worthwhile.

My experience has been that traffic gets thick at around 6 to 6:15pm but it doesn't start backing up until about 6:45pm and it stays that way until after 8.
That's the Kennedy anyway; maybe it's different on the Ike.
