I'm looking to move to the city and start medical school in the Fall. I currently live in a suburb to Chicago but plan on moving to the area in June. Does anyone know if the area around 18th and Racine is safe for a young single female?

Pretty decent over there. Gets kinda seedy west of Ashland, but that's also where many of the good restaurants are...

I think its fine and kind of like the character of East Pilsen.. My 20 something year old girlfriend isnt a big fan of living there though. That being said 5 years ago we lived at 18th and Damen which is much more seedy and nothing bad happened.

Depends if you're white.

Yes, that area it is safe for a young single female.

I have known a close to a dozen single women, mostly white student types, who have lived within a few blocks of that intersection over the past few years.

Most liked the area, some did not, but not for reasons related to safety.
