I've just gotten an apartment in the area, though I don't know much about it. We needed an apartment fast, and I've heard from some people that the area is a little sketchy, it seems that they were just afraid of the Puerto Rican neighborhood. The place seemed fine enough to me, albeit a bit... dingy I guess. Are the warnings I'm hearing valid or just scared white people from Wicker Park talking? (No offense Wicker Park! The friends in question are in fact white people from wicker park.)

The apartment is on Haddon between Western and California. (Im just moving to Chicago, so Im not sure if this area is technically West Town or Humboldt Park, so forgive my ignorance before hand.)

Thanks a boat load!

It's totally safe, you can take long walks in the middle of the night with no fear.

I'd say it's not too terribly dangerous if you play it smart. That area is seeing a lot of hipster spillover from Wicker Park and Ukrainian Village.
Are you closer to California or to Western? Because, to my knowledge, the latter would be better.

A block from Western, on the corner of Campbell. Yeah, I feel pretty fine about the area, just looking for a little clarification for my ol' lady's sake.

Thanks!

Also, any good bars and NY style pizza in the area? (Sorry Chicagoans, I can't get down on the deep dish!)

It depends where you are coming from, but the neighborhood is definitely iffy with some gang activity. If you are use to these type of conditions then no problem. If not, then you may want to discuss this more with your wife.

For NY style pizza, Santullo's near North ave and Milwaukee is pretty good. Much better than most the NY style pizza slices I used to get in Boston. As for bars, just keep walking around that area (North/Damen/Milwaukee) and hopefully something jumps out for you. It's a very popular area full of bars and clubs.

Santullo's is good but Gigio's absolutely nails old time N.Y. Pizza - and I am talking about the really great stuff from the 60s. It is a bit away from your area but worth the trip if you ever yearn for the real thing as it was done old school style - dripping grease and all.

Gigio's Pizzeria - Uptown - Chicago, IL

Let's put it this way, regardless of that particular block at this exact moment, there is significant violent gang activity not too far away.

There have been, for example, 125 homicides in Humboldt Park since 2007. There have been 12 in Bridgeport.

People wary of the area may not be 'scared white people' so much as people exercising caution or people aware of the neighbordhood's past, when it was much worse.

In any event, a flip attitude makes a place not an iota safer or more dangerous. It is what it is and you are not going to get a black and white answer.
