That map doesn't include the area that the OP was talking about. And the murders are also concentrated at Augusta and Hamlin, 2 miles from the area in question. I could pull out stats for the murders for Logan Square or Garfield Park and they would be equally relevant (i.e. not very).

yep. for example, look at this:

Some of my best friends lived on that block (we lived just SE) for almost 10 years in the late 90s-early Oughts.

It was completely safe, much less the larger area - imagine someone trying to use that block to support the idea that Roscoe Village was a gang haven. Nonsense.

For the past year I have lived a few block west of Western and North Ave intersection on Maplewood Ave and haven't had any problems. It's a nice quiet street with lots of families. No complaints here!

I swear Ill continue fighting against the gentrification.. As a Puerto Rican I'm obligated to you guys are intruding into our communities and kicking us out!

Isn't it mostly Mexican immigrants who are moving into/have moved into Humboldt Park? Also, how is this any different from white homeowners complaining that African-Americans are moving into their neighborhood?

Nah if the city didnt start this gentrification deal, we wouldn't have this problem to begin with, 10 years ago the Puerto Rican presence was strong, everysince this whole gentrification deal we got all sorts of movement in and out of the neighborhood...

Im not a racist but dont PUERTO RICANS get to have our own community????? I mean our Island is becoming populated by Asians Whites and Mexicans...

they gentrified East Harlem, Camden, and Florida Puerto Rican areas... What do we get as a people??? Where is our people and culture going to be in 50 years??

In other words, you're not a racist, but you want to keep the "undesirables" out of "your" neighborhoods.

Again, this sounds exactly like white residents of Marquette Park trying to keep Martin Luther King from integrating their neighborhood. I challenge you to explain how its okay for you to keep whites out of Humboldt Park, but it wasn't okay for whites to keep blacks out of Marquette Park.

Alternatively, since Puerto Ricans, like all other immigrant groups, tend to move to the suburbs as they get wealthier, perhaps the suburbs should be declared "off limits" for Puerto Ricans, since they are historically white neighborhoods with white culture, and white traditions. Maybe we can pass a law that prevents people from moving out of their "historic" neighborhoods? That way the Puerto Ricans will be forced to stay in Humboldt Park. Would that be better? Martin Luther King would be so proud.

What i dont want and what WE DONT WANT is for thousands of Puerto Ricans leaving everyyear just so the rich can get richer and for a few people to get closer living to there jobs or for hipsters to get closer view of the city for there nightlife

Probably assimilated in some way like every immigrant people and culture in every nation in history. Most of us in this country have ancestors who lived in ethnically homogenous immigrant communities for a few generations.
