It certainly is good for us as taxpayers. It's also good for business owners/workers downtown.

Is it good that these people will be even further divorced from the protests/aka populace at large? Probably not.

I was living in PIttsburgh when it hosted the G20.... useless damage done to property by people who don't even know what they are protesting seemed to be the theme..

Yeah, pretty much. G-8 Summits haven't been held in an urban area in decades, they're basically held in Davos type settings where any protests are kept miles away.

I suspect Putin was the big voice for getting it out of a city. The recent protests and attacks in Russia have him a bit unnerved, and he doesn't trust US security measures. The NATO summit will still be here (with many of the same major players attending) but that's different in nature, and won't attract the same level of protests or security threats. Any expenses incurred by the city to date will just be covered by the NATO Summit budget.

It occurs to me that holding the summit in Chicago, and then having the world see the violent protests and authoritarian measures which would be used to squash the protestors, could only be bad for Obama's re-election campaign.

I bet this is just a diversion. Next week they'll announce that both the G-8 and NATO are going to Indianapolis!
