Lookout for this Frontline documentry on PBS. I saw it lastnight. I thought it was pretty good. It's about former gang members who now work as gang violence interrupters.

I thought it was pretty good. A daughter of the infamous Jeff Fort is involved. I hope it is successful.

Without watching, I can tell this is about the same people featured in The Interrupters, which got a lot of acclaim and press, at least locally this past autumn. Made by the same guys who made Hoop Dreams.

Who runs The P Stones now? Does Fort still influence things from prison? Or has the gang splintered some since he got locked up?

Most estimates I've read say there are more than 100,000 active gang members in Chicago.

As they're disproportionately located in poorer communities of people of color, yeah, I'd say it's as big of an issue as an issue can get.

I don't think they want to be known.

As a military recruiter that had tried to help disadvantage youth I can tell you that even if they are interested most of the time they dont stand a chance to join the military for two reasons:

1. Can't pass the aptitude test (ASVAB): their environment was not conducive for them to excell at their school. Blame it on their parents, on the school system or on themselves, they just lack the education needed to pass the test.

2. Even for those that pass the test they might have one or more law violations that will preclude them to join the military. Drug convictions, weapons charges seem to be the more consistent. Remember that for entry even if you where found not guilty is still could count against you.

Lastly there is a lot of other factors like, medical issues, weight issues, dependent factors (i.e. single parents). Everytime I get one of these kids through my doors I try to help them as much as I can because I can identify myself with them as I was a disadvantage youth that has gain a lot from my military service, but many of them dont stand a chance of joining due to the factors mentioned above.
