You can rely on the the Red Line to take you to school and the Red Line is (as I have heard some say), the city's spine. I live in a studio that covers all my utilities for 600/month near the Wilson Ave stop. You can find anything you want for well under $1000. Chicago is much cheaper than DC. My sister lives in Silver Spring, MD and we frequently compare prices. Edgewater and Uptown have restaurants from all over the world. There are several smaller theater companies in the area and if you want a bigger production, ride downtown and go to the Deaborn St. Theater district. Same things with the city's museums, although they are a bit further of a trip south. Shopping is everywhere. As for transitioning to the "big city," there will definitely be some adjustments, but Chicago is not as overwhelming as New York or as sprawling as LA. It does make DC look tiny, though.
Good suggestions in terms of finding place within her price range, but her commute won't be under 30 minutes as she wanted. I live near the Wilson stop and my commute to Columbia (right around the corner from Roosevelt) takes about 40-45 minutes door-to-door. I can see that commute going up to almost an hour if she looks for a place around Loyola, especially if you have to walk a bit to the train. The commute may be shorter via one of the express buses that go down Lake Shore Drive, but with the recent construction, I'm not 100% sure about that.

I was thinking Uptown/Edgewater as well, if saving money is of any concern to you. Be aware that in Uptown there will be groups of people hanging around the train stations asking you for change regularly. I don't mind that sort of thing too much, but some people hate it. You can afford anywhere on your budget, really, and if being close to bars and clubs isn't of great concern to you, I can see you enjoying a lot of places. It'd help if you were more specific as to what you're looking for.

Thanks for the help everyone. If it helps I currently live in Richmond, VA so I'm not too far from the NoVA/DC area. I went to college in the mountains of Virginia, so I'm not really used to big city life. I'm doing this because I'm ready for a change and the opportunity to try something new.

I never really was into the bars and clubs much mainly because I don't smoke or drink. I'm not into the dorm life because I did that all through college and I've been living by myself for almost 2 years, so I've gotten used to living on my own without having someone else in my space 24/7.

Also, I'm currently single so I would like to be somewhat near places to meet someone. I like nerdy guys so more of the guys that hang out in coffee shops, bookstores, rrivia nights and anime conventions are more of my thing.

Let's NOT get too far off topic. The OP asked for help not a date.

Heh, if you are into gamer-nerdy guys, you can always attend the MLG events. I was at the Sunday one here and I'd estimate the ratio was 40:1, all nerds. It was at "Cravin Chicago Wings" way up north on California. Leenock eliminated Naniwa, to everyone's excitement since Naniwa is a foul, evil protoss. Go ZERG!

You can find out about upcoming ones by typing in "Chicago Barcraft" in any handy search engine. It's called wingcraft here though since it is an all-ages place, not to prevent some of the youngsters attending. The place is BYOB though.

There is a gaming lounge too, which I've never been to, but I will stop by there sometime at 3171 N. Clybourne, I was told to bring your own mouse, cause theirs are horrible. That's the "ignite network" gaming lounge.

Good luck on the move!
