Why do all these 24 hour joints close down? Is there no market for it?

As I said above, a lot of them served third-shift blue-collar workers, who are declining in number. Chicago has lost well over a million industrial jobs since 1970.

However! Two new late night coffee houses have opened just on Milwaukee Avenue: The Wormhole closes at midnight, and Cafe Mustache closes at 11PM. Huzzah!

Not many in the area you are asking about that aren't also diners. I can tell you about a place at State St. and I can't remember the cross street but remember there is a hotel near by. Very nice staff, friendly to all including the GLBT community!

That's late night? Surely you jest! Anyway if it is any consolation the Starbucks on Belmont and Clark is 24 hours. Sad to see a corporate craphouse replace real coffeehouses. Somehow Starbucks sees a market for it. Or maybe people here are simply so enamored with corporate chains that a local independent coffeehouse cannot compete by way of raising enough awareness of its existence to survive. "Hey guys I know where you can find a 24 hour Starbucks! Wow Starbucks their coffee is the best! Let's go!" "Cafe Voltaire? WTF is that? Why would I go there when I can go to Starbucks?"

Let them have their burnt coffee and sterile homogenized over-marketed surroundings I guess.

I was out that way a month or two ago. Had some time to kill, a book, and wanted some coffee. I walked up and thought I might hit the Starbucks, read and people watch.

Then I noticed another coffee shop across the street that looked like an independent. I went in and read and had a few cups. They gave me a big discount on the 2nd drink. All in all I liked the vibe a lot more than Starbucks.
