Hello,

My wife and I are moving from Minneapolis to Chicago this fall where she will be attending graduate school at U Chicago's Hyde Park campus. We currently own a condo in the Uptown neighborhood of Minneapolis where we enjoy biking, city parks, farmer's markets, coop grocery stores, and many locally owned businesses and restaurants with a focus on sustainability.

We are trying to figure out which neighborhoods in Chicago will offer the best mix of the green lifestyle and amenities that we enjoy in Minneapolis. One thing I have struggled with in my online research is that there only seems to be one coop grocery in all of Chicago proper and it's on the North Side, a long way from school.

Any thoughts from informed or like-minded folks would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Hyde Park is certainly green conscious, even though we are quite proud of the Dill Pickle co-op.

All of those exist in Hyde Park, with the exception of a co-op. Chicago isn't really a "co-op"y town. What are the benefits your derive from a co-op that make you specifically want a co-op? There may be alternatives in Chicago that provide what you want but aren't called co-ops.

Relatively-speaking.... Chicago is just not all that Green. They might have some Green schools that they try to show off, or some green businessess downtown - but the bulk of the city has not grasped being green. We still have an over-abundant amount of vehicles on the road, and our public transit system is embarassing (on a global-level).

You can find all of that here, but more on the north side, like you said.

Oh did anyone tell you that Chicago hasn't yet figured out the whole "recycling" thing? It's still coming together in bits and pieces, with a lot of gaps in the system. I was stunned when I first found this out.

Hope that doesn't scare you away.

How will the OP be getting from MN to here? Are they aware that even if they bicycle or walk they will be emitting elevated levels of CO2, an compound that the EPA has classified as a pollutant? My recommendation is they should make a concerted effort to minimize there carbon footprint. This might include swimming out to the deepest part of Lake Superior and weighing themselves down so that they become part of the deep water low temperature "carbon stores" which are probably safest for global climate change...

Default Ironically green?

ironically - Definition of ironically at YourDictionary.com

So the folks in Logan Square are really trying to be "brown" but they blow it?

This is actually kinda interesting: http://www.latinomagazine.com/summer...rown_green.htm
