Edgewater on the north side is very diverse.

NYC is different from many cities accross the USA. NYC us much more separated in the bouroughs, where as in Chicago it is one, massive, united city. As far as diversity, some NW side neighborhoods are diverse, but the further you go south the more segregated it gets.

The people here are a little nicer than in NYC (no offense).

No offense taken! A friend of mine in Chicago says people are more openly nice or just better at hiding their disdain. Which I completely prefer! I grew up in the South where outward kindness and private dislike is highly encouraged.

Ole: Do you like Logan Square? Is it Williamsburg-ish in the street life department?

The parking comment is encouraging, but I'm concerned about tauntaun stabling, care, and feeding. On the plus side you can slit them open for warmth.

We like Logan Square quite a bit. There aren't as many bars/cafes/restaurants/music venues per block as, say, Bedford Avenue, but there is plenty to do within walking distance of the Logan Blue Line stop. Wicker Park is more upscale these days like it seemed the East Village was becoming, but same story: plenty to do within walking distance of the Damen Blue Line stop (Piece is a good restaurant right near there, and Subterranean right near there gets good bands, or used to; Double Door seems to have gone down the tubes). You can bus or cab it to Bucktown from either location (or take a long walk from Wicker).
