It means something that is not the middle of nowhere and has more than one type of demographic group.

That would be at least half the neighborhoods and community areas in the city.

Some people think it means the area is majority non-white but with an ok percentage of whites. Others think it means an area is a majority of one minority.

You would be surprised how many people do not define the term the way one would think.

I'll go ahead and be honest since most people want to just be PC on here but if you want a "diverse" neighborhood, that just means dangerous and run down. Stick to the northside. anywhere east of western ave and south of irving park. North Center is a good exception though. Its more families though and a little quieter than lakeview/lincoln park. If you want to be PC and live in a "diverse" neighborhood go ahead and try, but you will find that Chicago is very segregated. Most of the blacks live in their areas, Hispanics in theirs, and Caucasians in theirs.

Otherwise there are all kinds of diverse attractions to visit in the city.

Also, Belmont ave in lakeview could be what you are looking for. I would consider it pretty diverse. You have a wide range of interesting people/characters there. Especially at night.

Of course there's levels, but Avenger was antagonizing the girl for no good reason. She doesn't want to live somewhere completely culturally homogenous. He knew exactly what she meant.

I have a degree in sociology. My first summer in Chicago was spent in Rogers Park, which actually is a very large contributing factor to why I fell in love with Chicago. I would guess that people who love to study society are likely to have a different view of places than the average person.

I would, too, probably. I've lived without owning a car now for over 10 years, but it depends on where she ends up living and where she needs to go, though.

"Culture" encompasses a lot of things, but one could easily separate out "diversity" as it relates to food, built environment (architecture), music scene, entertainment scene, race, breadth of transit access, economic diversity, zoning (varied mixes of residential, retail, commercial, industrial, public use, etc), etc.
