Wow crazy tight budget. I mean given two kids and a dog and a really long wish list you really need to understand that you are not giving your self much to spend at all.

Riverside is a nice town, and it has some adorable streets, but median prices are generally on par with Oak Park. The more afforadable alternative, that shares schools district with Riverside, would be the Hollywood section of Brookfield. Still to get a 3 br rental that is ok with a big lab...
(Congress Park is the other side of town, not all that much more affordable, definately less cute...)

I would not worry too much about a KINDERGARTENER being regarded as 'the weird kid" as moving upon entrance to Kindergarten is VERY consistent with pattern of young families leaving Chicago for the 'burbs. In any desirable district in the region there are lots of dedicated and professional kindergarten teachers.

Naperville definitely would rank well, as would pretty much all the other towns along the BNSF. as well as many towns in DuPage Co along the UP West line (Geneva, Wheaton, Glen Ellyn, Elmhurst, Oak Park) though again BUDGET may need to grow.

Ditto for Northshore / Northwest towns -- honestly there are lots of folks that pay more $2000/mo in property taxes!

My experience with Evanston is not so much that there are swaths of Northwestern oriented parts of town, so much as the "urbanness" of some parts of town dominates the more desirable qualities -- I beleive there are some helpful handdrawn maps that sort of point out the crime plagued and/or unattractive sections of town...

I cannot stress enough that you should try and rent someplace where you have a reasonable chance of affording a long term situation. The stability that will afford you will pay off in spades!

Good Luck!
