Thanks 847Mom! We're probably putting our place on the market in the next couple of weeks (interviewing agents starting tomorrow). Gulp!

Because of the taxes raised from the big houses, the Avoca students get some nice perks, like a laptop for every student.
You're only a few exits further from Milwaukee in Wilmette/Glencoe than you would be in Northbrook, so I personally wouldn't worry about that aspect. Ten minutes added to your husband's commute is going to be more noticable than ten minutes added to a trip to Wisconsin.
I think you're very smart to stick to an affordable home instead of stretching, because the kids' activities, real estate taxes, and other expenses add up quickly!
It reminds me a little more of STL where I also grew up. (what high school did you go to?
District 37 is a hidden treasure. It is a great area to be in, more land and home for the price. As a realtor and resident of the North Shore I never really understood the resistance by some.

847 Mom, thanks for giving the real scoop on the neighborhood. I think the misperception I had of the neighborhood might be shared by enough people to cause the prices to be lower than they should be - which means it could be a great value for the money.
Rlest8, I didn't grow up in STL, but I lived there long enough to know why you're asking me about high school!
