To anser the OP's question though.. Try Chicago Heights. It has a very "city" feel to it. Or at least, I, a suburbanite, think it does. Lots of different kinds of people. A number of different businesses. Lots of traffic. Pedestrians who can't afford cars walking around..

So do the ones in the western burbs. EVERY single girl I know (spare one) works to support their kids.

Any more stupid, false stereotypes you wanna share?

Some people are gonna be bored anywhere and some people will have fun anywhere. When I was young I had fun everywhere: city, burbs; anywhere I went.

People move to the suburbs for the schools, safety, and more space. Nobody moves there for the excitement. Naperville, maybe Schaumburg, are about the only ones I can think of.

Most of the suburbs that existed as towns before the post-WWII diaspora have older cores with downtowns and walkable streets. Some are quite vibrant. But the soccer Moms and SUVs are inescapable.

I'm referring to towns like La Grange, Hinsdale, Downers Grove, Glen Ellyn, Wilmette, Highland Park, Naperville, etc. All have vibrant, walkable downtown areas surrounded by older housing--usually near the Metra stop. But of course, the "traditional" walkable neighborhoods surrounding the downtowns usually give way to post-war sprawl after a few blocks (though some of the towns listed are quite charming for miles).

Wink Find Fun Here

With you Holden as I too am not into the strip mall scene aside from getting my drycleaning and Walgreens. Looking for character & a great time in the burbs? Downtown Naperville is legit. Great food, bars, great LIVE music, dancing and a nice blend of old/new. Bonus is tons of cabs ready to whisk you away when it is time. Check out the clips of Lantern & Quigleys on our website http://www.johngreenerealtor.com/video/index.php Naperville does have a lot of subdivisions that are great for kids, filled with many good people and LOTS of hot soccer moms. If you want something different we have lots of unique non subdivision housing including our historic district and homes on larger parcels from $200K to $6M. I live in a 1950's ranch downtown and love it. Walk to downtown, train, events, and even a strip mall to the south to get to TJ's.

I see many soccer moms in the city too. With (GASP) minivans! Lol

In suburbia, boredom is better than the alternative..
Um, who would even consider those, haha. Most suburbs I have been to, with the exceptions of Oak Lawn and Evergreen Park haven't been too boring. In my opinion, OL and EP are boring because they seem to be a much older kinda place.
